La Federación Internacional de la Cruz Roja y la Media Luna Roja, y la Cruz Roja Italiana organizaron eventos especiales en Solferino para conmemorar el sesquicentenario de la batalla. Los eventos se llevaron a cabo entre los días 23 y 28 de junio. Esta actividad contó con la presencia de más de 750 jóvenes de más de 150 países. Este evento culminó con la “Fiaccolata”, vigilia a la que asistieron más de 14000 personas que con velas encendidas hicieron un recorrido a pie de 10 kilómetros, aproximadamente.

قد قامت الاتحاد الدولي لجمعيات الصليب الأحمر والهلال الأحمر الوطنية بالإضافة إلى الصليب الأحمر الإيطالي بتنظيم عدة مناسبات متميزة في مدينة سولفيرينو الإيطالية لأجل إحياءذكرى مائة وخمسين سنة على معركة سولفرينو. وتم الاحتفال بالمناسبات المذكورة من اليوم الثالث والعشرين إلى اليوم الثامن والعشرين في شهر يونيو/حزيران مع حضور أكثر من 750 شابا من 150 دولة.وبلغت الذكرى ذروتها عبر موكب "فياكولاتا" حيث حضر أكثر من 14000 شخص ومعهم شموع موقدة وهم يسيرون في الليل على أرجلهم حوالي 10 كيلومترات.
Proactive. This is an interesting term I discovered while translating an article by the contemporary Islamic thinker, Dr. Umar Faruq Abdullah. I initially translated it as "activo" (because I am translating the article into Spanish). However, I began to look at the term again, took a quick look through the internet and found out the term is not that old. Here is a brief definition or explanation of "proactive" on Wikipedia:
The use of the word proactive, sometimes also written pro-active was limited to the domain of experimental psychology in the 1930s[1]. Oxford English Dictionary (OED)[2] credits Paul Whiteley and Gerald Blankfort, citing their 1933 paper discussing proactive inhibition as the "impairment or retardation of learning or of the remembering of what is learned by effects that remain active from conditions prior to the learning".[3] The 1946 book Man's Search for Meaning brought the word to the wider public domain. The author, Austrian existential neuropsychiatrist Dr. Viktor Emil Frankl, used the word proactive to describe a person who took responsibility for his or her life, rather than looking for causes in outside circumstances or other people. Frankl stressed the importance of courage, perseverance, individual responsibility and awareness of the existence of choices, regardless of the situation or context. [4]
As Spanish is a language which is close to English it can afford to create a neologism, "proactivo." Another example is "empowerment" = "empoderamiento." However, as Arabic has completely different roots, the translation of such terms must be explanatory (ترجمة تفسيرية ). In the case of "proactive" the Arabic translation which came to mind was ذو مبادرة. And when I looked through the net I found the following:

غير المبادر : ينقاد للظروف و للمشاعر و البيئة و المحيط و يجعلها هي التي تتحكم في حياته و تقوده . المبادر : تقودهم و تؤثر في حياتهم قيمهم الداخلية و قدراتهم الداخلية . -ماذا تعني المبادرة ؟؟ : هي لا تعني أن نكون مستثارين و نتصرف بحمق و تسرع و عدائية و لا مبالاة بالآخرين أو بما يدور حولنا لكنها تعني أن و ندرك مسؤوليتنا في وقوع الأشياء من حولنا...هـ

This is the translation of some of what Ibn Katheer has to say about verse 29 from Surat At-taubah. To participate in the discussion pinch on the following link:
And fight those from the people who received the Book who do not believe in God nor the day of judgment and do not prohibit what God or His Messenger have prohibited and do not follow the path of the Truth until they are humiliated and are forced to pay.
"فهم في نفس الأمر لمَّا كفروا بمحمد – صلوات الله وسلامه عليه – لم يبق لهم إيمان صحيح بأحد من الرسل ولا بما جاءوا به وإنما يتبعون آراءهم وأهواءهم وآباءهم فيما هم فيه لا لأنه شرع الله ودينه لأنهم لو كانوا مؤمنين بما بأيديهم إيماناً صحيحاً لقادهم ذلك إلى الإيمان بمحمد – صلوات الله عليه – لأن جميع الأنبياء بشروا به وأمروا باتِّباعه فلمّا جاء كفروا به وهو أشرف الرسل عُلِمَ أنهم ليسوا متمسكين بشرع الأنبياء الأقدمين لأنه من عند الله بل لحظوظهم وأهوائهم فلهذا لا ينفعهم إيمانهم ببقية الأنبياء وقد كفروا بسيدهم وأفضلهم وخاتَمهم وأكملهم ولهذا قال:
They are in the same situation when they did not believe in / when they rejected Muhammad – peace and blessings be upon him -: they no longer had a sound belief in any of the messengers nor in what they brought with them. (On the contrary), they only follow their opinions, desires and what their parents followed; not that this was the law of God or His path. For, had they correctly believed that which they had between their hands, this (belief) would have led them to believe in Muhammad – peace and blessings be upon him – as all of the Prophets announced his coming and ordered that he be followed. So when he did come (and) they rejected him, the noblest of the Messengers, it became known they were not followers of the law of the previous prophets because it was from God but because of their inherited circumstances and whims. This is why their belief in the rest of the Prophets is of no benefit to them having rejected their leader, the best, the most complete and the seal of all prophets. This why God says:

وهذه الآية الكريمة نزلت أول الأمر بقتال أهل الكتاب بعدما تمهدت أمور المشركين ودخل الناس في دين الله أفواجاً. فلمّا استقامت جزيرة العرب أمر الله رسوله بقتال أهل الكتابين اليهود والنصارى وكان ذلك في سنة تسع ولهذا تجهز رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – لقتال الروم ودعا الناس إلى ذلك وأظهره لهم وبعث إلى أحياء العرب حول المدينة فندبهم فأوْعَبوا معه واجتمع من المقاتلة نحو ثلاثين ألفاً وتخلف بعضُ الناس من أهل المدينة ومن حولهم من المنافقين وغيرهم وكان ذلك في عام جدب ووقت قيظ وحر وخرج عليه السلام يريد الشام لقتال الروم فبلغ تبوك فنزل بها وأقام على مائها قريبا من عشرين يوما ثم استخار الله في الرجوع فرجع عامه ذلك لضيق الحال وضعف الناس كما سيأتي بيانه بعد إن شاء الله.
This generous verse revealed the first order to fight the People of the Book after the elimination of the obstacles posed by the polytheists and the embracing of Islam by people in large numbers. Hence, when the situation in the Arabian Peninsula stabilized God ordered His messenger to fight the people of the book: the Jews and the Christians. This was in the ninth year and it is the reason why the Messenger of God – peace and blessings be upon him – made preparations to fight Rome inviting people to join him sending for volunteers from the Arab neighbourhoods of Madinah calling upon them. So they joined him until over thirty thousand fighters were gathered eventhough some people from Madinah stayed behind among them the hypocrites as well as others. This was in a year of drought and time when the weather was extremely hot. So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, left for Sham to fight Rome. When he reached Tabouk he camped their twenty days, consulted God through prayer whether he should return or not. His followers in general echoed their desire to return due to the difficult situation and low moral of the people the details of which will be dealt with later God willing.
وقد استدلّ بهذه الآية الكريمة مَن يرى أنه لا تؤخذ الجزية إلا من أهل الكتاب أو من أشبههم كالمجوس لما صح فيهم الحديث عن رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – أخذها من مجوس هجر. وهذا مذهب الشافعي وأحمد في المشهور عنه وقال أبو حنيفة رحمة الله: بل تؤخذ من جميع الأعاجم سواء كانوا من أهل الكتاب أو من المشركين ولا تؤخذ من العرب إلا من أهل الكتاب.
This generous verse has been used as evidence by those who consider jizyah is not taken except from people of the book or people like them such as Zoroastrians based on the authentic Hadeeth from the Messenger of God – peace and blessings be upon him – who took jizyah from Zoroastrians from Hajar. This is the school of Shafi and Ahmed’s known position. Abu Hanifah, may god have mercy on him, says: Jizyah is taken from all non – Arabs whether they be people who follow the Book or polytheists. It is only taken from Arabs who follow the Book.
وقال الإمام مالك: بل يجوز أن تضرب الجزية على جميع الكفار من كتابي ومجوسي ووثني وغير ذلك. ولمأخذ هذه المذاهب وذكر أدلتها مكان غير هذا والله أعلم.
Imam Malik says: Jizyah may be imposed on all disbelievers whether they be followers of the Book, Zoroastrians, polytheists, etc. but this is not the place to discuss these schools or the evidence they base their arguments on.
Ma sha Allah, I got in touch with my brother Munes and he is doing well. By the way, this is the person that got me interested in Islamic studies and Arabic. So it was really nice to get in touch with him after all these years.
